Sex Discrimination Amendment (Removing Discrimination Against Students) Bill 2018

On 6 December 2018, the Senate, pursuant to a recommendation of the Selection of Bills Committee, referred the Sex Discrimination Amendment (Removing Discrimination Against Students) Bill 2018 to the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by 11 February 2019.

To date, the committee has accepted 1,080 submissions. It also held public hearings in Brisbane on 6 February 2019, and Sydney on 7 February 2019.

The committee seeks an extension of the reporting date to 12 February 2019 to enable it to further consider the evidence and conclude its deliberations.

About this inquiry

This bill seeks to amend the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 to remove the capacity of bodies established for religious purposes that provide education to directly discriminate against students on the basis of their sexual orientation, gender identity or intersex status.
