Native Title Legislation Amendment Bill 2019 [Provisions]

On 17 October 2019 the Senate referred the provisions of the Native Title Legislation Amendment Bill 2019 to the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by 28 February 2020. On 4 December 2019, the Senate granted an extension of time for reporting until 16 April 2020. On 26 March 2020, the Senate granted an extension of time for reporting until 19 August 2020.

The deadline for submissions to the inquiry is 28 November 2019.

About this inquiry

The bill is intended to improve native title claims resolution, agreement‑making, Indigenous decision‑making and dispute resolution processes. It is also intended to confirm the validity of certain agreements made under the Native Title Act 1933 following the Federal Court decision in McGlade v Native Title Registrar & Ors.
