On Wednesday, 23 June 2021, the Senate agreed to the following second reading amendment:

1. The Water Legislation Amendment (Inspector-General of Water Compliance and Other Measures) Act 2021 be referred to the Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee for inquiry upon Royal Assent to examine any potential further amendments to improve the operation of the Act, and any related matters; and
2. The Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee:
   1. Present an interim report three months after the date of Royal Assent, and
   2. Report six months after the date of Royal Assent.

Royal Assent was given on 30 June 2021. The Committee has therefore committed to provide an interim report by 30 September 2021 and a final report by 30 December 2021.
