On 27 February 2020, the Senate referred the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Amendment (Climate Trigger) Bill 2020 to the Senate Environment and Communications Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by 14 October 2020.

On 26 March 2020, the reporting date was extended to the second sitting Wednesday of 2021. On 11 December 2020, the reporting date was extended to 11 May 2021.

On 16 April 2021, the committee presented a progress report recommending that the Senate grant an extension of time to report until 20 October 2021.

On 18 October 2021, the Senate granted an extension of time to report until 8 December 2021. On 22 November 2021, the reporting date was extended to 16 February 2022.

On 11 February 2022, the reporting date was extended to 16 May 2022.

The committee requests a further extension of time to report until 2 August 2022 to allow it to consider the evidence received and to conclude its deliberations.
