On 11 May 2023, the Senate referred the Murdoch Media Inquiry Bill 2023, upon introduction, to the Environment and Communications Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by 16 October 2023. The bill was introduced on 13 June 2023.

The closing date for submissions is 31 August 2023.

On 16 June 2023, the committee was granted an extension of time for the report until 12 December 2023.

On 10 November 2023, the committee was granted an extension of time for the report until 30 April 2024.
