On 23 August 2018, the Senate referred the Treasury Laws Amendment (Improving the Energy Efficiency of Rental Properties) Bill 2018 to the Environment and Communications Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by 23 November 2018.

The closing date for acceptance of submissions is 28 September 2018.

On 19 November 2018, the Committee presented a progress report recommending that the Senate grant an extension of time to report until 5 December 2018.

On 3 December 2018, the Senate granted a further extension of time to report until ​6 February 2019​.
