Information about the Inquiry

On 24 June 2010 the Senate referred the following matter to the Senate Standing Committees on Environment and Communications for inquiry and report.

Please note that the Senate Finance and Public Administration Legislation Committee is also currently conducting an inquiry into elements of Australian privacy law (http://www.aph.gov.au/senate/committee/fapa_ctte/priv_exp_drafts/index.htm). The two inquiries are separate, and some individuals and groups may wish to contribute to both inquiries.

The original reporting date was 20 October 2010. On 30 September 2010, following the election, the Senate granted an extension of time to report until 17 November 2010.  
On 17 November 2010 the Senate granted a further extension until the second sitting day of the second sitting week in March 2011, being 22 March 2011.
On 22 March 2011 the Senate granted a further extension of time to report until 24 March 2011.

Submissions should be received by 30 September 2010. The reporting date is 24 March 2011. On 24 March 2011,the Senate granted an extension of time for reporting until 07 April 2011.

The Committee is seeking written submissions from interested individuals and organisations preferably in electronic form submitted online or sent by email to ec.sen@aph.gov.au as an attached Adobe PDF or MS Word format document. The email must include full postal address and contact details.

You must not release your submission without the Committee's permission. If you do, it will not be protected by Parliamentary Privilege. At some stage during the inquiry, the Committee normally makes submissions public and places them on its website. Please indicate if you want your submission to be kept confidential.
