Pursuant to standing order 38(7), I present an interim report on petrol prices in Australia.

The Senate referred this matter to the Committee on 22 June 2006, for report on 9 October 2006. The Committee advertised the inquiry and to date, has received 72 submissions. The Committee has held several public hearings on the reference, in Queensland, Western Australia and Canberra.

The Committee considers that it is necessary to conduct further public hearings before completing the reference, as a number of key potential witnesses have yet to be heard. The Committee intends to hold these hearings this week, and its final hearing on Thursday 19 October, at which the ACCC will give evidence.

The Committee intends to table its final report to the Senate on 30 November 2006.

Senator George Brandis

Chair
