Inquiry into the Workplace Relations Amendment (Protecting the Low Paid)
The bill amends the objects of the Workplace Relations Act 1996 to ensure
that the primary focus of the award safety net is to address the needs of
the low paid. It also requires the Australia Industrial Relations Commission
to recognise this primary focus when performing its functions and exercising
its powers in relations to awards.
The Workplace Relations Amendment (Protecting the Low
Paid) Bill 2003 was introduced in the House of Representatives on 13
February 2003 and was extensively debated on 5 March 2003. The bill passed
the House on 5 March 2003 and introduced into the Senate on 6 March 2003.
The bill was referred to the Employment, Workplace
Relations and Education Legislation Committee on 19 March and the committee
expects to report in June. The committee has yet to decide if and when to
hold a public hearing. Submissions to the inquiry are due by 28 April 2003.
