Dear Mr President
On 28 March 2018, the Senate referred the provisions of the Social Services  Legislation Amendment (Encouraging Self-sufficiency for Newly  Arrived Migrants) Bill 2018 to the Senate Community Affairs Legislation Committee (Committee) for  inquiry and report. Submissions were sought by 11 April 2018 and the committee  was due to report on 4 May 2018. The Committee tabled a progress report on 4  May 2018 seeking to extend the reporting date to 18 May 2018. The Committee tabled a second progress report on 18  May 2018 seeking to extend the reporting date to 25 May 2018.
The Committee has received 21 submissions and held one public hearing, in Melbourne  on 17 April 2018.
The Committee intends to seek a further extension to the reporting date to 15  June 2018 to enable it to consider the impact of related measures announced in  the 2018-19 Budget and conclude its deliberations.
