Inquiry into Fisheries Legislation Amendment Bill 2007 and the Fisheries Levy Amendment Bill 2007
Information about the Inquiry
On 13 June 2007, the Senate referred the
provisions of the above Bills to the Senate Rural and Regional Affairs and
Transport Committee for inquiry and report by
18 June 2007.
The primary focus of the Fisheries Legislation Amendment Bill is to
amend the Torres Strait Fisheries Act 1984, with a view to
modernising fisheries management practices, to make them more consistent
with those already in place under the Fisheries Management Act 1991
and Queensland's Fisheries Act 1994.
The Fisheries Levy Amendment Bill contains amendments which are
consequential to the Fisheries Legislation Amendment Bill 2007. These
amendments appear in a separate bill to the Fisheries Legislation
Amendment Bill 2007, because under the Constitution, levies are a form of
taxation and require separate legislation.
