Information about the Inquiry

On 21 June 2005, the Senate referred the above reference inquiry to the Legal and Constitutional References Committee, for inquiry and report by 8 November 2005. On the 6 October 2005 the Committee agreed to extend the reporting date to the 1 December 2005.  The Committee has agreed to further extend the reporting date to the 21 December 2005.

In view of the significant public interest in this inquiry and the need to thoroughly consider the evidence it has received and to finalise its recommendations on a wide range of complex issues, the Committee resolved to table an interim report on 21 December 2005 and to table its final report on the first sitting day in 2006.  The Committee has agreed to further extend the reporting date to the 27 February 2006. On the 22 February 2006, the Committee agreed to further extend the reporting date to the 2 March 2006.

Lodging Submissions

Submissions are called for by 29 July 2005. Submissions become Committee documents and are only made public after a decision by the Committee. Unauthorised release of submissions is not covered by parliamentary privilege. Further assistance can be obtained by phoning the secretariat on (02) 6277 3560.
