Australia's Foreign and Trade Policy Strategy - Advancing
the National Interest
Terms of reference
On 10 December 2002, the Senate referred the following matters to the
Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade References Committee for inquiry and
report:
An examination of the adequacy and effectiveness of the Governments foreign and
trade policy strategy, with particular reference to the forthcoming Foreign and Trade
Policy White Paper, Advancing the National Interest.
In examining this matter, the Committee will have particular regard to:
a) The merits of new policy directions identified by Advancing the National Interest;
b) Whether Advancing the National Interest meets its stated objective of best using
Australias credentials and attributes to enhance Australias national
interests;
c) The strategys consistency with Australias international obligations; and
d) The process for implementation.
Advancing the National Interest was tabled by the
Minister on Wednesday 12 February 2003.
Government Response
Submissions
The Committee invites individuals and organisations with knowledge and
information relevant to the inquiry's terms of reference to lodge submissions.
The closing date for submissions is now Friday, 11 April 2003.
The Committee has prepared a Discussion Paper (Word
format) in order to stimulate comment about issues arising from the
White Paper. Persons and organisations making submissions to the
inquiry may wish to use the Discussion Paper as a springboard for their
contributions. The Discussion Paper does not represent the final
views of the Committee.
Submissions may be lodged with:
All communications with the Committee and its Secretariat are protected by
parliamentary privilege. It is expected that submissions will be published unless clearly
marked as confidential. Persons making submissions must not disclose them without the
prior approval of the Committee. Submissions are covered by parliamentary privilege but
the unauthorised release of them is not.
The Committee encourages the lodgement of submissions in
electronic form. E-mailed submissions must include the author's full name, phone number
and postal address.
