Australian Education Bill 2012

Information about the Inquiry

On 29 November 2012 the Senate referred the Australian Education Bill 2012 for inquiry and report.

Inquiry into the provisions of the Australian Education Bill 2012

The bill sets out a national vision for schooling reform and for the development of the National Plan for School Improvement. The bill would enshrine a national commitment to ensure that all Australian children can equitably access high quality education, and would provide the foundation for a legislative framework that places this commitment at the centre of school funding and education delivery. The bill's purpose is to enable schools to provide excellent education for all students, to ensure that Australian schooling is equitable, and to place Australian student performance within the top five globally in recognised international testing by 2025. The bill would recognise the commitment of the Commonwealth to work with State and Territory governments and other partners to undertake work in five reform directions: quality teaching, quality learning, empowered school leadership, transparency and accountability, and meeting student need.
