Inquiry into the effectiveness of education and training programs for Indigenous Australians

Interim Report

Senate Employment, Education and Training References Committee
August 1998

On 9 March 1998, the Senate referred to the Senate Employment, Education and Training References Committee matters relating to the effectiveness of education and training programs for indigenous Australians. In order to meet its requirement to table a report by 20 August 1998, the Committee wishes to report progress.

The Committee advertised its reference at the end of March and set Friday, 26 June as the closing date for the receipt of submissions. To date, 25 submissions have been received. The Committee also expects to receive a number of other important submissions over the next few weeks.

The Committee has begun its survey of past reports and recommendations related to indigenous education and training including the Report of the National Aboriginal Education Policy, the Report on the Inquiry into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody and the National Review of Education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. A summary of recommendations and outcomes is being prepared and will form, along with an analysis of matters raised in submissions, the basis of the Committee's final report.

The Committee has resolved to extend the time to report on this reference to the last sitting day in December 1998. Due to the alteration of the Senate sitting pattern, the Committee was unable to seek a formal extension of time to report from the Senate prior to the original reporting date of 20 August 1998.
