Inquiry into the Customs Legislation Amendment (Modernising Import
Controls and Other Measures) Bill 2006
Information about the inquiry
On 21 June 2006, the Senate
referred the above Bill to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Legislation
Committee for inquiry and report by 1 August 2006.
The Bill
proposes to amend the Customs Act 1901 to, amongst other things,
- allow a
person to surrender certain prohibited imports that have not been
concealed;
- allow
for the granting of post-importation permissions for certain prohibited
imports; and
- allow
infringement notices to be served for certain offences.
Lodging Submissions
Submissions are being called for by 10 July 2006. Submissions become Committee documents and are only made
public after a decision by the Committee. Unauthorised release of
submissions is not covered by parliamentary privilege. Further assistance
