On 2 December 2015, the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Law Enforcement initiated an inquiry into illicit tobacco. At the dissolution of the Senate and the House of Representatives on 9 May 2016 for a general election on 2 July 2016, the parliamentary committees of the 44th Parliament ceased to exist and inquiries referred to the committees lapsed.

On 12 October 2016, the committee re-initiated the inquiry in the 45^th Parliament. It lapsed again at the dissolution of the House of Representatives on Thursday 11 April 2019. Further information about the inquiry in the 45^th Parliament can be viewed on that inquiry's webpage.

On 24 July 2019, the committee resolved to reinitiate this inquiry in the 46^th Parliament. Further information about the new inquiry can be accessed at its webpage.
