The Minister for Home Affairs, the Hon Tony Burke MP, has referred the following bills to the Committee for inquiry and report:
Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission Bill 2026
Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (National Policing Information Charges) Bill 2026
The bills are informed by, and intended to give effect to, the Government response to legislative recommendations of the Independent Review of the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission and associated Commonwealth law enforcement arrangements.
The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission Bill 2026 would replace the Australian Crime Commission Act 2002 with a new Act ‘to equip the ACIC with the functions and powers required to deliver its role as Australia’s national criminal intelligence agency’. The Bill aims to clarify the ACIC’s role and enhance its ability to obtain, analyse, evaluate and communicate intelligence relevant to serious and organised crime. The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (National Policing Information Charges) Bill 2026 would replace the Australian Crime Commission (National Policing Information Charges) Act 2016 to continue ACIC’s role in providing Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Checks.

The Committee is reviewing the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission reform package 2026, which consists of the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission Bill 2026 and the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (National Policing Information Charges) bill 2026. The bills aim to clarify and enhance ACIC's role and powers under a new legislative framework.
