Joint Select Committee on oversight of the implementation of redress related recommendations of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse

On 20 June 2017 the House of Representatives agreed to a Senate resolution that a joint select committee on oversight of the implementation of redress related recommendations of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse be established following the tabling of the final report of the Royal Commission.

The Royal Commission delivered its final report on 15 December 2017. Information on the Royal Commission is available here.

The committee is inquiring into:

            (a)   the Australian Government policy, program and legal response to the redress related recommendations of the Royal Commission, including the establishment and operation of the Commonwealth Redress Scheme and ongoing support of survivors; and

            (b)   any matter in relation to the Royal Commission's redress related recommendations referred to the committee by a resolution of either House of the Parliament.

The committee was due to table its final report by the final sitting day in November 2018 (currently 29 November 2018).

On 22 October 2018, the House of Representatives agreed to a Senate resolution, dated 18 October 2018, that the committee extend its final reporting date to the second last sitting day in March 2019.

Participating in the inquiry

The committee is continuing to accepting submissions. The submission deadline was 17 August 2018, although the committee will continue to consider and accept submissions after this date.

Please note that while the committee welcomes all written submissions and other evidence, the committee is not able to investigate or make findings in relation to individual cases of sexual abuse. The committee's inquiry will focus on the redress related recommendations of the Royal Commission and related matters.

If you need advice about the Redress Scheme please contact the Department of Social Services on 1800 737 377. Further information about the Redress Scheme can also be found here.

If you are concerned about your submission being public you can ask the committee to keep your submission confidential or for your name to be withheld.

  • Confidential submissions are only read by members of the committee and the secretariat and are not published online.

  • Name withheld submissions are published online, but without your name, and therefore can be read by the public.

If you would like either of these options please clearly indicate this on the front of your submission.

If you are interested in contributing to the committee's inquiry, please refer to the terms of reference. You may find it helpful to look at the guide for preparing a submission. It includes suggestions on what to include in a submission, a check list, and information about what happens to your submission once it has been received by the committee.
