PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE TO HOLD PUBLIC HEARING INTO
THE NATIONAL CRIME AUTHORITY
Chairman of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on the National Crime Authority,
Mr Peter Nugent MP, today announced details of a public hearing to be
conducted tomorrow into the National Crime Authority's Annual Report
1999-2000.
Mr Nugent said:
The Joint Committee on the National Crime Authority is the parliamentary
watchdog of the NCA. It has a statutory duty to monitor the NCA's
operations and to report to the Parliament if it has any concerns.
It also has a specific statutory duty to examine the NCA's annual
reports to Parliament.
The NCA's annual report is one of its primary accountability documents
and, from time-to-time, the Committee conducts a public hearing with
NCA representatives into the report's contents.
The 1999-2000 Annual Report is the first since Mr Gary Crooke's
appointment to the position of NCA Chairperson in September 1999 and,
accordingly, the Committee considered that an examination of the Authority's
operations under his leadership was timely.
The hearing will be held on Wednesday, 28 February 2001 in Committee
Room 1S3, Parliament House, Canberra, between 6.00 pm and 8.00 pm.
Members of the public and the media are welcome to attend and to observe
the proceedings.
