and Income Tax Assessment Act 1997
to introduce the first child tax refund (baby bonus) which provides for a refundable tax offset, of a minimum of $500 and up to $2 500 per annum, for a maximum period of 5 years, for parents following the birth, adoption or legal guardianship of a child on or after 1 July 2001.

to: exempt farmers in “exceptional circumstances” declared areas from the requirement that farm management deposits have to be held for 12 months in order to qualify for tax concessions; and make minor amendments in relation to the operation of the farm management deposit scheme. Also contains application provisions.

Bills and committees
The House of Representatives Selection Committee and the Senate Selection of Bills Committee routinely consider whether bills should be referred to committees for inquiry and report. The House Committee reports its determinations to the chamber, while the Senate Committee makes recommendations which the Senate may then adopt. Bills may also be referred to committees by either chamber or by the relevant minister to House and joint committees.
