The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) release data on employed people by industry (in their main job, where a person holds more than one job) in the quarterly publication Labour Force, detailed, quarterly, cat. no. 6291.0.55.003. Data is available since November 1984, with the most recent data being November 2013. The next available data (February quarter 2014) will be released on 20 March 2014.
ABS releases original, trend and seasonally adjusted quarterly estimates on employment by industry division. For finer level detail on industry of employment (e.g. subdivision), the ABS releases original (unadjusted) quarterly estimates. Data is classified according to the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC), 2006 (Revision 2.0), cat. no. 1292.0. For more information on classifications within specific industries refer to Chapter 8 – The detailed classification.
Given the current interest in employment by industry, two tables have been compiled using ABS quarterly estimates from 2012 and 2013 (seasonally adjusted). To allow for comparisons, employment for each industry division is provided, as well as the total number of employed people.
Data for additional quarters and over longer periods of time is available through the ABS Labour Force, detailed, quarterly, cat. no. 6291.0.55.003, see ‘Downloads’ > ‘Time series spreadsheets’ > Table 04. Employed persons by industry – trend, seasonally adjusted, original.
