Celebrate the International Day of Democracy at the heart of Australian Parliament House with a day of discovery, reflection, and fun for all ages!

Curious about how democracy works? Join us for activities and tours designed to help families and visitors explore the workings of Parliament House. Highlights include guided tours of the Chambers where Australia’s democracy unfolds, live music, a reading nook with friendly Story Dogs and more!

First observed in 2008, the International Day of Democracy is a United Nations initiative held annually on 15 September and observed this year at the Australian Parliament on Sunday 14 September. It’s a chance to reflect on the importance of democracy and explore what it means here in Australia.

It’s fun, it’s friendly, and it’s all about making the world a better place – one story at a time!

Join us for a heartwarming reading experience with Story Dogs at Parliament House! In this gentle and welcoming activity, children and families can explore books about democracy in the company of our friendly Story Dogs and their handlers. Dive into books that help you understand how you can create positive change in your corner of the world.

All books are available from the Parliament Shop, so you can keep exploring after story time!

Chamber Pop-up Tours

Step inside the Senate and House of Representatives Chambers where Australia’s democracy comes to life. The Chambers will be open all day and our friendly guides will be available to answer your questions.

Sit in the public galleries, take a photo, and learn more about what happens in these iconic spaces. Don’t miss our pop-up talks throughout the day for fascinating insights into parliamentary processes and history.

Come and explore the spaces where decisions are made and democracy is supported.

Join the Canberra City Band ensembles as they celebrate 100 years of bringing music to Canberra. Enjoy one of their ensembles on the Great Verandah or in the Marble Foyer.

In a special performance, the Australian Rugby Choir will lift voices and our spirits in Members’ Hall.
