‘This design represents my Gomeroi great grandmothers written mark ‘x’ as she was illiterate and Bulga* who is a practical self-contained little amphibian learning to deal with extremes by burying itself deep in mud as drought approaches. Bulga exude their own protective cocoon to enshrine themselves while they enter a state of suspended animation until long awaited rains bring country back to life. They emerge from their hibernation bearing an astonishing cruciform aposematism.’ – Artist's statement.

Penny Evans
Penny Evans (Gamilaroi people) is an artist based in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales. Her ceramics and mixed media collages connect with family, community, and national histories of colonisation’s aftermath. Evans is the recipient of numerous awards and residencies and exhibits her work nationally, including CEREMONY, the 4th Indigenous Art Triennial at the National Gallery of Australia in 2022.

*Bulga means crucifix frog in Gamilaraay language.
