Yankirri Jukurrpa (Emu Dreaming) is a painting by Warlpiri artist Ormay Nangala Gallagher in the Parliament House Art Collections.
This Jukurrpa (Dreaming) story belongs to Jangala/Jampijinpa men and Nangala/Nampijinpa women. In contemporary Walpiri paintings, specific iconography is used to represent the Jukurrpa, associated sites and other elements. Emus are usually represented by their wirliya (footprints), arrow-like shapes that show them walking around Ngarlikurlangu eating yakajirri (bush raisin).1 Gallagher describes this work,
This particular site of the Yankirri Jukurrpa, (Emu Dreaming) is at Ngarlikurlangu, north of Yuendumu. The yankirri travelled to the rockhole at Ngarlikurlangu to find water.2
Ormay Nangala Gallagher
Ormay Nangala Gallagher (born 1966) is a Warlpiri artist and educator. Born in Alice Springs, she attended school in Yuendumu and later worked at the Nyirrpi store (1986-1994) and school (1995-2004). Gallagher began painting in the 1980s with Warlukurlangu Artists. Her work focuses on her Dreamings – Emu, Water and Flying Ant. Gallagher travelled to Bahrain in 2008 and Delhi, India in 2009 with Warlukurlangu Artists. Her work has been exhibited across Australia as well as overseas including the US, Switzerland, Germany and Singapore.3
