Parliamentary departments

There are four Parliamentary Departments, each of which provides support for the working of Parliament.

Department of the Senate

The Department of the Senate provides secretariat support for the Senate and its committees, and advice and support to enable senators and others to participate in their meetings. Its work is substantially driven by the requirements of the Senate and senators.

Department of the House of Representatives

The Department of the House of Representatives provides services to support the efficient conduct of the House of Representatives, its committees and certain joint committees as well as a range of services and facilities for Members in Parliament House.

Department of Parliamentary Services

The Department of Parliamentary Services supports the work of the Australian Parliament by providing effective, high quality and sustainable services to Parliamentarians and building occupants.

Parliamentary Budget Office

The Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) is an independent and non-partisan department. The PBO informs Parliament by providing costings of policy proposals and analysis of the budget. It also enhances public understanding of the budget and fiscal policy settings.

Parliamentary Library

Since its establishment in 1901, the Parliamentary Library has served as a trusted source of information, analysis and advice for the Australian Parliament. Services are confidential, impartial, and offered on an equal basis to all parliamentarians, parliamentary committees, and to staff acting on their behalf. The Library is part of the Department of Parliamentary Services.

Parliamentary Education Office

The Parliamentary Education Office educates Australians about Australia’s parliamentary democracy. Through accessible, immersive, experiential programs and resources they foster informed, engaged and active citizens of all ages.

Parliamentary Workplace Support Service

The Parliamentary Workplace Support Service provides independent, confidential and trauma aware human resource advice to create and maintain safe, respectful, and inclusive workplaces.
