Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey: Selected Findings from Waves 1 to 21 (Melbourne Institute: Applied Economic & Social Research, University of Melbourne)

HILDA commenced in 2001 as a nationally representative longitudinal study of Australian households. It collects information annually on a wide range of topics, including household and family relationships, childcare, employment, education, income, expenditure, health and wellbeing, personal attitudes and values, and life events and experiences.

Articles of interest from HILDA:

• In 2001, around 18.5% of young people aged 15 to 24 were classified as lonely. Two decades later in 2021, this figure had risen to 24.8%. (Australia’s young people are getting lonelier)
• In 2021, 28.9% of women and 22.7% of men were identified as being in psychological distress. Psychological distress has risen across all age groups; however, it was most significant in the 15 to 24 age group where 42.3% of younger Australians experienced psychological distress in 2021, up from 18.4% in 2011. (The 'perfect storm' causing Australians psychological distress)
• The HILDA Survey found changes to income tax rates and tax thresholds over the past 21 years have not had an equal impact on all people. The majority of Australians, those earning income that puts them in the top 70% of earners have been negatively impacted by bracket creep. Those in the top 10% of incomes have received significantly greater tax relief than Australians with smaller pay packets. (Over the last 21 years, the highest earners received the most tax relief)
• E-cigarettes and vapes are most popular with 15 to 24-year-olds, closely followed by people in their late 20s. 14.1% of Australians over the age of 15 have tried e-cigarettes or vaping. (Vaping is a 'young person phenomenon' in Australia)
• Just over half of males (54%) and 47% of females aged 18 to 29 are still living under the same roof as their parents. (More Australian adult children are living with their parents longer)

   

Schools, 2023 (Australian Bureau of Statistics)

• In 2023, total school enrolments reached a record high of 4,086,998 across 9,629 schools. This is 44,486 (1.1%) more enrolments than the previous year.
• The number of full-fee paying overseas students contributed to the higher growth rate, increasing by 21,124 (36.6%) students from 2022.
• Between 2019–2022 full-fee paying overseas student enrolments dropped 41.9%, primarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
• Independent schools recorded the highest enrolment growth rate for the seventh consecutive year at 3.9%. This was followed by Catholic schools, up 1.4%, and government schools, up 0.3%.
