The Defence Legislation Amendment (Miscellaneous Measures) Bill 2020 seeks to do two things. Firstly it amends the Defence Home Ownership Assistance Scheme Act 2008 to extend the period from two to five years in which a member who has left the Australian Defence Force (ADF) can access the Defence Home Ownership Assistance Scheme. In addition, it amends the Australian Defence Force Superannuation Act 2015 (ADF Superannuation Act) so that former ADF members can continue to make contributions to their ADF superannuation accounts once the ADF Super Trust Deed has been amended to so allow. The Defence Service Homes Amendment Bill 2019 was introduced into the Senate on 19 September 2019 and seeks to amend the Defence Service Homes Act 1918 to expand eligibility for coverage under the Defence Service Homes Insurance Scheme. Read more...
Last week—28 June 2019—marked the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Versailles—or to give it its full name, the Treaty of Peace between the Allied and Associated Powers and Germany, and Protocol. This date in 1919 marked the fifth anniversary of the event that sparked the First World War, the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand and his wife Sophie. The Treaty was the most important outcome of the Paris Peace Conference of 1919–20 and was signed for Australia by Prime Minister William (Billy) Hughes and the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for the Navy, Joseph Cook.
