What’s new

Dementia (AIHW)

Did you know . . .

  • The exact number of people with dementia in Australia is currently not known. It is estimated that in 2020 there were between 400,000 and 459,000 Australians with dementia, with Alzheimer’s disease accounting for up to 70% of diagnosed cases.
  • Of the 858 people who died due to COVID-19 in the first 10 months of 2020, 30% also had dementia (140 women and 117 men).

Did you know . . . in 2020:

  • During 2020, 7% of all COVID-19 cases in Australia and 75% of all deaths were in people living in residential aged care facilities.

  • Up to early July 2020, it was estimated that health care workers in Australia were 2.7 times more likely to contract COVID-19 than the general community.
  • There were almost four times as many deaths due to COVID-19 for people living in the lowest socioeconomic group compared with the highest socioeconomic group, and age-standardised mortality rates were 2.6 times higher.

Statistics of the month

Mission Australia: Youth Survey, 2020

The Mission Australia Youth Survey is the largest annual survey of young Australians of its kind. In 2020 a total of 25,800 young people between the ages of 15 and 19 responded to the survey. In summary:

What issues are of personal concern to young people?
  • Coping with stress was the top issue of concern, with more than four in 10 (42.5%) respondents indicating they were extremely or very concerned about this issue
  • Around one third of respondents were extremely or very concerned about mental health (33.9%), body image (33.0%) and school or study problems (32.4%)
  • Close to one quarter (24.3%) of respondents were extremely or very concerned about physical health.
What issues do young people think are the most important in Australia today?
  • Four in 10 young people cited equity and discrimination (40.2%, increasing from 24.8% in 2019) and COVID-19 (38.8%) as important issues in Australia today
  • Three in 10 (30.6%) young people cited mental health as a national issue, down from 36.2% in 2019
  • 29.8% were concerned about the environment, a decrease since 2019 (34.2%).

How stressed are young people?

For the first time in 2020, young people were asked to report on how much of the time they felt stressed in the past four weeks. Responses were rated on a five-point scale that ranged from all of the time to none of the time.

  • Four in 10 (42.6%) young people felt stressed either all of the time or most of the time
  • 53.9% of female respondents felt stressed all of the time or most of the time compared to with 26.8% of males
  • 28.7% of males felt stressed a little of the time or none of the time compared with 15.2% of females.
