Dear President

Inquiry into the Government's Energy White Paper

Interim Report

Pursuant to Senate Standing Order 38(7), I present to you the interim report of the Senate Environment, Communications, Information Technology and the Arts Reference Committee on the budgetary and environment implications of the Government's Energy White Paper.

On 24 June 2004 the Senate referred the budgetary and environment implications of the Government's Energy White Paper to the Senate Environment, Communications, Information Technology and the Arts References Committee for inquiry and report. The inquiry was not concluded by the end of the 40 th Parliament.

On 8 December 2004 the Senate referred the inquiry back to the Committee for report by 10 March 2005. The Committee was also granted the power to consider and use the records of the committee appointed in the previous parliament. The reporting date for the inquiry was subsequently extended on 9 February to 18 April 2005.

The Committee has received 17 detailed submissions during the course of both parliaments and held public hearings in Canberra on 4, 5 and 10 August 2004 and 11 March 2005.

The Committee wishes to consider thoroughly the evidence it has received in order to finalise its recommendations on a wide range of issues, and accordingly intends to table its final report in the near future.

Yours sincerely

Senator John Cherry
Chair
Environment, Communications, Information Technology
