The Suitability of the Australian Army for Peacetime, Peacekeeping and War

Terms of reference

On 27 April 1999 the Minister of Defence requested that the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade investigate and report on the suitability of the Australian Army for peacetime, peacekeeping and war. The inquiry will review the current and proposed changes to Army to ensure that it provides viable and credible land forces able to meet a range of contingencies.

In considering this matter, the Committee was requested to take into account:

  1. The Fundamentals of Land Warfare document, released in March 1999;
  2. The Restructuring of the Australian Army initiative;
  3. The Defence Reform Program;
  4. ADF force structure and preparedness;
  5. The role and impact on full-time and part-time personnel; and
  6. Australia's Strategic Policy (1997) (ASP 97).

Written submissions are invited from organisations and individuals interested in placing evidence before the Committee. Submissions should be prepared with reference to the guidelines on making a submission.

Submissions should be forwarded to arrive by close of business, 2 July 1999, to:
