Senate Estimates

Estimates of government expenditure are referred to Senate committees as part of the annual budget cycle. This opportunity to examine the operations of government plays a key role in the parliamentary scrutiny of the executive.

Estimates committees

Government portfolios are spread across the following eight Senate committees for the consideration of estimates. Reports and transcripts on past proceedings can be found on the committee estimates pages below.

Prorogation of the 45th Parliament 

On 11 April 2019, a proclamation was issued by the Governor-General, acting on the advice of the Prime Minister, proroguing (or formally bringing to a close) the 45th Parliament from 8.29am on 11 April. A general election will be held on 18 May 2019.

The 2019-20 Budget estimates hearings scheduled for 11 and 12 April 2019 will not proceed.
