Inquiry update

The committee has completed the evidence-gathering phase of the inquiry. Members have been meeting people involved with catchment management across Australia, for informal discussions and inspections and for formal public hearings.

During inspections, the committee has been talking with catchment management groups about on-ground issues such as administration, funding, best practice in catchment management, and how communities can be encouraged to partake in catchment activities.

The committee has also been looking at catchment projects on the ground, to get an appreciation of the types of activities undertaken by community catchment groups.

At public hearings, the committee has heard from representatives of government, industry, research, environmental and community groups who are involved in catchment management. Transcripts from the public hearings are published on this website as they become available.

The committee has held inspections and public hearings in Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia, Canberra and Victoria.

The committee has prepared its report and recommendations. The report is scheduled to be tabled in the House of Representatives on Monday, 26 February 2001.
