On 15 May 2014, the Senate referred the Recognition of Foreign Marriages Bill 2014 to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee for inquiry and report.

The reporting date was 3 September 2014. On 27 July 2014, the Senate granted an extension of time for reporting until 25 September 2014.

For administrative reasons due to the large volume of submissions received, the committee has decided to publish submissions from organisations and a selection of submissions from individuals (50 submissions from individuals in support of the bill and 50 submissions from individuals opposed to the bill). The committee has decided not to publish submissions comprising short or general statements, form/campaign letters and petitions.
