About this committee

The Joint Standing Committee on the National Capital and External Territories is appointed under a resolution of appointment which was passed by the the House of Representatives on Thursday, 1 September 2016 and the Senate on Monday, 12 September 2016.

The Committees functions are to;

  • conduct inquiries into matters relating to Canberra as the National Capital and Australia’s external territories as may be referred to it by either House of the Parliament or a Minister: and
  • may inquire into matters raised in annual reports of relevant Commonwealth government departments and authorities which stand referred to the Committee in accordance with a schedule tabled by the Speaker.

Under the Committee’s Resolution of Appointment, which provides that the Annual Reports of the National Capital Authority (NCA) stand referred for any inquiry the Committee may resolve to adopt, the Committee is empowered to inquire into the NCA. To canvass matters of interest the Committee has adopted a practice of holding a biannual public hearings with the NCA. The transcripts of the hearings from the 44th Parliament are available here.
