2015 My First Speech winners announced

Muthukkumarasamy Mohanapiriyan, or Piri, from AB Paterson College on Queensland's Gold Coast, is the winner of the 2015 My First Speech competition.

The nationwide competition was open to all Australian students enrolled in years 10 to 12 and entries came in from all over the country. Students were asked to imagine themselves as a newly elected Member of Parliament and to write and present a three minute speech about issues important to their electorate or something they would like to communicate to the federal Parliament and the Australian people.

Rachel Aquino from Chatswood High in NSW came second and from Ballarat Grammar in Victoria, third place went to Anna Pryse-Smith from Ballarat Grammar in Victoria.

Piri, Rachel and Anna's prize includes a trip to Canberra, accompanied by a parent or guardian, to present their speeches live at Parliament House in front of Members and guests.

The judges this year were Member for Longman and Assistant Minister for Innovation Hon Wyatt Roy MP, Member for Griffith Ms Terri Butler MP and Member for Melbourne Mr Adam Bandt MP.

My First Speech is a Department of the House of Representatives initiative to engage high school students with the work of the House.
