Commencement: The amendments outlined in the
Digest are taken to have commenced on 17 September 1997.
To impose new rates of customs duty on tobacco and tobacco
products.
The reader is referred to the Digest for the States Grants
(General Purposes) Amendment Bill (No. 2) 1997.
Items 2-4 of Schedule 1 insert in the Customs Tariff Act
1995 new rates of customs duty for tobacco and tobacco
products. The rate of duty applying to:
- cigars, cheroots and cigarillos containing tobacco of a kind
for which the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) has declared a
wholesale list price - $86.92 per kilogram and 50.32% of the
wholesale list price;
- cigars, cheroots and cigarillos containing tobacco of a kind
for which the CEO has notdeclared a wholesale list price -
$232.17 per kilogram;
- cigarettes containing tobacco of a kind for which the CEO
has declared a wholesale list price - $86.92 per kilogram
and 50.32% of the wholesale list price;
- cigarettes containing tobacco of a kind for which the CEOhas
not declared a wholesale list price and are of a weight such
that there are not more than 1,200 per kilogram - $232.14 per
kilogram;
- cigarettes containing tobacco of a kind for which the CEO
has not declared a wholesale list price and are of a weight
such that there are more than 1,200 per kilogram - $350.00 per
kilogram;
- smoking tobacco of a kind for which the CEO has declared
a wholesale list price - $86.92 per kilogram;
- smoking tobacco of a kind for which the CEO has not
declared a wholesale list price - $232.17 per kilogram;
- other tobacco of a kind for which the CEO has declared a
wholesale list price - $86.92 per kilogram; and
- other tobacco of a kind for which the CEO has not
declared a wholesale list price - $232.17 per kilogram.
