Ballast Water Research and Development Funding Levy Bill

To impose a levy on certain ships entering Australian ports in
order to provide funds for the Strategic Ballast Water Research and
Development Program.
The reader is referred to the background contained in the digest
to the companion Bill, the Ballast Water Research and
Development Funding Levy Collection Bill 1997 (the Collection
Bill).
Clause 5 of the Bill imposes the levy in
accordance with the provisions of the Collection Bill.
Clause 6 sets out the amount of the levy:
- $210 - for bulk carriers;
- $140 - for other ships which are liable to pay the levy under
the Collection Bill.
