Appendix 11

Major numbering changes affecting the standing orders

This appendix records the major changes in numbering affecting the standing orders and provides a key to identifying standing orders in the 1903 debates.

The first column records the current number of each standing order (or part thereof). These standing orders have been in effect since the first sitting day in 1990.

The second column lists the equivalent old number as it was before the 1989 revision. These are the numbers used in the first six editions of Australian Senate Practice.

The third column lists the original number of the standing order as it was debated in 1903, thereby giving access to the extensive debates on the standing orders. A number in square brackets in the third column indicates the number of the particular standing order as it appeared in the first printed edition in 1903.

Other numbering changes that occurred through the reprints from 1909 to 1937 are not recorded as there is no contemporary published commentary that relies on them. The pre–1989 numbers were more or less in place by 1922, well before the 1938 MS was commenced.
