PARLIAMENTARIANS FOR ACTION TO REDUCE VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND CHILDREN

It is our intention for the group to provide a non-partisan forum for Senators and MPs to increase awareness of the national crisis of violence against women and children and to discuss policy responses needed to address it. In particular, the Group will provide an opportunity for parliamentarians to:

  • receive updates on implementation of the 4th Action Plan of the National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children;
  • liaise with key experts and advocates working in the field of domestic and family violence;
  • discuss and disseminate new research and reports;
  • receive updates on current efforts to address violence against women and children throughout Australia, including early intervention programs; and
  • discuss opportunities for new programs or improvement of current programs.

  1. To raise awareness of endometriosis as a reproductive and chronic pain condition affecting many women throughout Australia.

PARLIAMENTARY FRIENDS OF FACIOSCAPULOHUMERAL MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY (FSHD)

It is intended that this Group will provide a non-partisan forum for MPs and Senators to raise awareness of FSHD, a genetic disorder which causes progressive muscle wasting. FSHD affects 1 in every 7500 Australians - around 3000 people, and an estimated 1 million individuals globally. There is no treatment or cure available.

With gun violence continuing to be a high profile challenge in other countries, Australia needs to remain steady as a beacon for gun control. The establishment of this group will remember the tragedy of Port Arthur and the reforms that followed, and make sure we balance the needs of sporting shooters against the demands of the community to stay safe.

PARLIAMENTARY FRIENDS OF HAEMOCHROMATOSIS

Hereditary Haemochromatosis (HH) is a condition the symptoms of which are completely preventable if the genetic risk is identified and blood donations initiated. Early symptoms of HH include fatigue, and many sufferers ignore these symptoms until it is too late.

HH is Australia's most common genetic disorder, which affects approximately 1 in every 200 Australians of European origin. However, awareness of the disorder is still quite low amongst the Australian population and people are needlessly suffering from its affects.

The Parliamentary Friends of Haemochromatosis aims to:

  1. Raise awareness of Haemochromatosis amongst parliamentarians and the wider population,
  2. Promote the need for more Australians to be diagnosed and treated,
  3. Inform Federal Parliamentarians of the latest developments in treatment, screening and raising awareness.

PARLIAMENTARY FRIENDS OF PALLIATIVE CARE GROUP

Established in 2008, the Group informs Members and Senators on issues surrounding palliative care. Palliative care is person and family-centred care that helps people live their life as fully and as comfortably as possible when living with a life-limiting or terminal illness. The primary goal is to optimise quality of life. Palliative care is not just about dying or 'end of life'. It ranges from palliative care when needs are straightforward and predictable, to specialist palliative care when individuals have complex and persistent needs. Palliative care is available for all ages, from paediatric populations to older Australians.

The Parliamentary Friends of Palliative Care Group aims to:

  • disseminate relevant information to Senators and Members on palliative care issues and services available;
  • act as a bi-partisan forum for policy discussion among Senators and Members on palliative care and facilities; and
  • provide feedback to Senators and Members on opinions and concerns raised by community groups and constituents around palliative care issues.

  5. To encourage and promote waste and product auditing as well as clear procurement goals for recycled products and materials at all levels of Government, as well as in statutory agencies, not-for-profits and private enterprise;
  6. To promote opportunities for regional development, employment and new manufacturing through the adoption of effective waste and recycling strategies; and
  7. To encourage and promote the link between effective waste management/recycling, a sustainable environment and climate change.

Meetings of the PFG will take a variety of formats, including a general approach to inform members of developments, events to raise awareness and encourage participation in recycling, expert roundtables, and a focus on specific issues.

Representatives and stakeholders of recycling initiatives or industries or guest speakers on recycling or related topics may be invited.
