HRH Queen Elizabeth II; Opening of Parliament House 1988 (detail), Parliament House Art Collection, Canberra, ACT.
22 March to 13 May 2018
Location: exhibition area (level 1)
In 2018 Australia’s Parliament House will turn 30. Since the official opening on 9 May 1988, it has been a meeting place for the Parliament of Australia and the symbolic heart of our parliamentary democracy.
The construction of Parliament House within the 10 year period remains an architectural feat unrivalled in Australia. This exhibition charts the progress of one of Australia’s most ambitious building projects from the announcement of its construction in 1978 through to the ceremonial opening by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1988. The objects, artworks and images document the story of building a national icon.
