Maritime Transport and Offshore Facilities Security Amendment (Maritime Security Guards and Other Measures) Bill 2005

Information about the Inquiry

On 10 August 2005, the Senate referred the provisions of the above bill to the Senate Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by 5 September 2005.

The bill proposes amendments to existing legislation to improve maritime transport security. It proposes amongst other things "move-on powers" for maritime security guards together with the power to request certain information from those found in a maritime security zone (MSZ).

The Committee's inquiry will examine the training and licensing of maritime security guards, access to maritime security zones and the removal, storage/disposal of vehicles and vessels from a MSZ.

The Bill, Explanatory Memorandum and the Second Reading Speeches may be accessed at below.

The Committee invites written submissions on the Bill. Due to the short timeframe for this inquiry the submission should be lodged with the Committee as soon as possible. The Committee prefers to receive submissions electronically as an attached document - email: rrat.sen@aph.gov.au – otherwise by fax (number 02 6277 5811).

The Committee intends to hold a public hearing on the Bill on Monday, 29 August 2005.

Inquiries from hearing and speech impaired people should be directed to the Parliament House TTY number (02) 6277 7799.
