Anti-People Smuggling and Other Measures Bill 2010
Information about the Inquiry
On 11 March 2010 the Senate referred the Anti-People Smuggling and Other Measures Bill 2010 for inquiry and report.
The Bill amends the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation Act 1979, the Criminal Code Act 1995, the Migration Act 1958, the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, the Surveillance Devices Act 2004 and the Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Act 1979 with a view to strengthening the Commonwealth's anti people smuggling legislative framework. In particular, the Bill introduces a range of offences to target and deter people smuggling activity, and provides the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation with powers to investigate serious border security threats.
Submissions should be received by 16 April 2010. The reporting date is 11 May 2010.
The Committee is seeking written submissions from interested individuals and organisations preferably in electronic form submitted online or sent by email to legcon.sen@aph.gov.au as an attached Adobe PDF or MS Word format document. The email must include full postal address and contact details.
