Dear Mr President

On 14 June 2017, the Senate referred the implications of climate change for Australia's national security to the Senate Foreign Affairs Defence and Trade References Committee (Committee) for inquiry and report. Submissions were sought by 4 August 2017 and the committee was due to report on 20 April 2018.

The Committee has received 70 submissions and held two public hearings, one in Canberra on 8 December 2018 and one in Canberra on 20 March 2018.

The Committee is seeking an extension to the reporting date to 17 May 2018 to enable it to conclude its deliberations.

Yours sincerely,

Senator Alex Gallacher

Committee Chair
