Inquiry into the provisions of the Australian Technical Colleges (Flexibility in Achieving Australia's Skills Needs) Amendment Bill 2006

Information about the inquiry

A bill amending the Australian Technical Colleges (Flexibility in Achieving Australia's Skill's Needs) Act 2005 was referred to the Employment, Workplace Relations and Education Legislation Committee on 11 May 2006.  The committee is expected to report on 6 June 2006.

The amendment appropriates no additional funding to the program, which remains at $343.6 million, but spending will be increased for the early years, and reduced in the latter years of the program which runs to 2009-10.  Funds to be brought forward are needed to accelerate the early expansion of the program to allow 20 or more colleges to be operational by 2007.

The Australian Technical Colleges (Flexibility in Achieving Australia's Skills Needs) Amendment Bill 2006 also provides that such transfers of funds will, in future, be done by regulations rather than by an amendment to the principal act.

Submissions from interested parties are invited and should be emailed to the Secretary by Tuesday, 30 May 2006. Submitters will be notified if a public hearing is scheduled.

Inquiries from hearing and speech impaired people should be directed to the Parliament House TTY number (02) 6277 7799.
