COMMITTEE IN PERTH TO HEAR ABOUT CATCHMENT PROBLEMS

The Commonwealth House of Representatives Environment and Heritage committee will hold a public hearing for its inquiry into catchment management next Tuesday, 28 March, in Perth.

The committee's catchment management inquiry is looking at issues such as the role of Commonwealth, state and local governments, the private sector and the community in catchment management, and the need for monitoring and evaluation on catchment activities.

As well as inviting written submissions from the public, Parliamentary committees gather evidence through formal public hearings and informal discussions with the people on the ground, in this case people who are involved in catchment management activities.

While in Western Australia the committee will be visiting the Geographe Bay (Busselton) and Avon (Northam) catchments for on-ground discussions and inspections with catchment groups, and the Swan Catchment Centre in Perth.

At the public hearing the committee will be hearing from representatives of the WA state agencies involved in catchment management, the Pastoralists and Graziers' Association of WA, the WA Municipal Association, and the Urban Hills Land Conservation Committee.

The public hearing will commence at 11:30 a.m. at the Blackburne Room, Saville Park Suites,201 Hay Street, Perth. More details of the hearing program.

For more information on the public hearing contact the committee secretariat on 02 6277 4580.

For further information on the inquiry contact the Hon. Ian Causley MP, committee chair, on 02 6277 4218 (Parliament House) or 02 6642 6356 (electorate).
