General information about the consideration of the 2006-07 Budget estimates (membership of committees, portfolio allocation, terms of reference etc.) is available on the Senate web page.

An agenda for each of the legislation committees listed below is available on the Senate webpage and will be updated as necessary.

The Senate Daily Summary will be published each day after the legislation committees meet. The Summary will give a brief overview on the progress made by each committee and the business each committee expects to consider to the next day.

Community Affairs Legislation Committee
Portfolios allocated: Family, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs; Health and Ageing

The committee met from 9.05am until 11.00pm.

The committee:

  • commenced the Health and Ageing portfolio (completed whole of portfolio/corporate matters, outcomes 2, 3, 4 and 9)
  • will continue the Health and Ageing portfolio (Professional Services Review, outcomes 1, 5 to 8, and 10 to 15) when it meets on Thursday 1 June 2006 in Senate Committee Room 2S1

Economics Legislation Committee
Portfolios allocated: Industry, Tourism and Resources; Treasury

The committee met from 9.05am until 10.47pm.

The committee:

  • continued the Treasury portfolio (completed Takeovers Panel, National Competition Council, Australian Office of Financial Management, Treasury outcomes 2 and 4, Australian Securities and Investment Commission, Australian Prudential Regulation Authority, Productivity Commission, and Australian Bureau of Statistics)
  • will continue the Treasury portfolio (Corporations and Markets Advisory Committee, Australian Accounting Standards Board, Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, and Treasury outcome 1) when it meets on Thursday 1 June 2006 in House of Representatives Committee Room 2R1

Employment, Workplace Relations and Education Legislation Committee
Portfolios allocated: Education, Science and Training; Employment and Workplace Relations

The committee:

  • commenced the Education, Science and Training portfolio (completed Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, Australian Research Council, Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, department’s Science Group, Cross Portfolio, Innovation and Research Systems Group, Indigenous and Transitions Group, and Strategic Analysis and Evaluation Group)
  • will continue the Education, Science and Training portfolio (department’s Higher Education Group, Vocational Training and Education Groups, Schools Group and International Education Group) when it meets on Thursday 1 June 2006 in Senate Committee Room 2S3

Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Legislation Committee
Portfolios allocated: Defence (including Veterans’ Affairs); Foreign Affairs and Trade

The committee:

  • commenced the Defence portfolio (completed portfolio overview and major corporate issues, Defence Material Organisation, major capital facilities projects, and Defence outcomes 1 to 4)
  • will continue the Defence portfolio (Defence outcomes 5 to 7, Business processes, and people) and
  • commence the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (portfolio overview, corporate and general matters, and outcomes 1 to 5) when it meets on Thursday 1 June 2006 in the Main Committee Room
