Estimates

The Senate agreed to a motion establishing dates for estimates hearings for 2010.

Estimates hearing

The Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport Legislation Committee held a public meeting during the sitting of the Senate to further consider 2009-10 supplementary budget estimates. The committee met from 7.31 pm until 10.00 pm, calling the department and agencies of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry portfolio, including the Australian Fisheries Management Authority, the Bureau of Rural Sciences, the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority and the Biosecurity Services Group.

Notice of motion given

Senator Fisher gave a notice of motion relating to estimates hearings of the Education, Employment and Workplace Relations Legislation Committee and Fair Work Australia.

New inquiry

The Senate referred matters relating to import restrictions on beef to the Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee to report by 30 November 2009.

Proposed reference

The Senate did not agree to refer matters relating to certain subsidiaries of the Reserve Bank of Australia to the Economics References Committee [first speaker].

Reporting date extended

The Senate agreed to extend the reporting date for the inquiry of the Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee into rural and regional access to secondary and tertiary education opportunities to 11 December 2009.

Notice of motion given

A notice of motion was given by Senator Milne to refer matters relating to Australia's Mandatory Last Resort Home Warranty Insurance Scheme to the Economics References Committee for report by 31 March 2010.

The Senate discharged Senator Scullion from and appointed Senator Humphries to the National Capital and External Territories Joint Committee.

  • Minister for Climate Change and Water (Senator Wong) to table a copy of a letter relating to funding approval for stage 2 of the Northern Victorian Irrigation Renewal Project by no later than noon on 29 October 2009
  • Minister representing the Treasurer (Senator Sherry) to table documents relating to the Frontier Economics report on the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme and any proposed modifications to the scheme by no later than 4 November 2009
