Australian Parliament House to be lit in the colours of the French Tricolore

Joint statement from the President of the Senate, Senator the Hon Stephen Parry and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Hon Tony Smith MP

15 November 2015

As a mark of our solidarity with the people of France, Australia’s Parliament House will be lit this evening from 8pm in the colours of the French Tricolore.

Only last week, we met with a delegation from the French Senate on the eve of Remembrance Day to reflect on our close ties that were forged on French soil nearly a century ago in the First World War.

President Parry also praised the spirit of the French people in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo terror attacks, which he witnessed first-hand when he represented Australia in the March of Solidarity in Paris in January along with world leaders.

“Together with over a million French people we marched against those who seek to attack us,” said Senate President Parry.

Again, in the wake of this horrific terrorist attack, the Parliaments of our two nations resolve that our mutual commitment to the liberty of free peoples will never be diminished.
