The Joint Standing Committee on Treaties will hold a public hearing in Canberra on Monday 15 June 2020 to discuss the termination of the Australia – Indonesia Investment Agreement.

The Agreement has been superseded by the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement between Australia and Indonesia (IA-CEPA), signed in 2019.

“The new trade agreement between Indonesia and Australia contains a contemporary and fit-for-purpose investment chapter, which provides greater protections for investors whilst preserving the freedoms for governments to pursue public policy measures,” said Committee Chair Mr Dave Sharma MP.

“I am pleased to see the Government has acted on the recommendation of the Committee in terminating this previous investment agreement.”

The new trade agreement contains modern provisions, such as protections for regulating in the public interest. Termination of the previous agreement will also provide investor certainty about which rules apply to their investment.

The Committee will also review recent amendments to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species at the 15 June hearing.
